A dump meal is made by dumping all the ingredients into a cooking vessel at one time.

A dump meal is meal that can be made by placing, or dumping, all ingredients at once into a container such as a slow cooker or solar cooker to prepare. Many dump meal recipes can be made beforehand in batches and stored for long periods in the freezer. When needed, the frozen meals can be thawed and placed into the cooking vessel.

When preparing dump meals, combine all ingredients into your cooking vessel and stir. For slow cookers, close the lid and cook for the specified time.

If preparing recipes for storage, date and label your freezer bag first, then combine all ingredients in the bag. Vacuum sealers provide the longest storage. Before cooking, transfer the bag from the freezer to the refrigerator and allow to fully thaw. Empty the contents of the bag into your cooking vessel and cook as directed.

Dump meal are most efficient if all the produce in the recipe ripen in the same season and the recipe is prepared in that season. If growing some or most of your own produce this allows year long use of surplus crops if the meals are made in batch and frozen. If shopping for most or all of your own produce this allows for the freshest crops at their lowest prices.

Meal exchanges

Many dump meals can easily made in batches and stored for long periods before cooking. This allows for meal exchanges, where members such as friends or coworkers with similarly sized households prepare a recipe for themselves and make extra batches to trade. Each member prepares a different recipe. After preparation, the extra meals are traded so each household has one of each of the different meals prepared.

For example, seven coworkers form a group and each person selects a different recipe to prepare. On Sunday, each member creates seven batches of their recipe and trades the other six on Monday at work. The result is each household has seven different dinners for the week having only spent limited time preparing food over one Sunday afternoon. Each member saved money too, as they purchased fewer ingredients and in bulk.

Throughout the week in the evening each household selects an already prepared meal for the next day from the freezer to thaw in the refrigerator. The next morning, they place the thawed meal in their slow cooker to cook while they're at work.

Next week, they rotate the recipes along with excess ingredients from the previous week. This rotation accounts for the differences in ingredient costs, to make it fair for each coworker. After 13 weeks of rotating, the group selects seven new recipes to match the fresh produce for that season.

Next season the group decides to cook two recipes each Sunday afternoon instead of one. This allows the members to exchange lunch and dinner meals.
