Feel free to improve recipes on Permawiki. As taste is a matter of preference, and dietary needs vary greatly, recommendations have been created.
Ingredients
- Specify amounts. Use 1/8 tsp salt instead of a pinch of salt.
- Specify recommendations. Use 1/2 tbsp pepper instead of pepper to taste. People will modify seasonings at the table to suit their preferences, but salting to taste in a dump meal made a week before the meal will be consumed is challenging.
- Emphasize fresh ingredients first. Assume people will grow their own produce. Use 5 tomatoes instead of 1 can of tomatoes. Canned ingredients can be recommended as a substitute such as 5 tomatoes (or a 14oz can of tomatoes).
- Avoid wasted produce. Scale recipes or adjust ratios to use 1 apple instead of 3/4 apple.
- Emphasize produce that is easily grow.
- Limit produce in a recipe to produce that harvested in the same season.
- Limit ingredients to what is commonly found in pantries. Use paprika instead of smoked paprika.
- Simplify ingredient lists when possible.
Other
- Try the recipe as written before changing ingredients or relative proportions of ingredients.
- Create or scale recipes to serve four.
