A sweetner is a general term for many sweet tasting substances:
- Sucrose - Also called table sugar. A white powdery crystal used in cooking. Primarily extracted from sugar beets or sugar cane.
- Glucose - Also called dextrose. A very simple compound that enzymes in animals break most carbohydrates into to provide energy into individual cells.
- Fructose - A type of sugar found in many fruits and vegetables as well as in honey.
- Maltose
In addition to sugars, there are other sweet tasting compounds. Some of which do not impact, or have a lesser impact, on blood glucose levels.
