Glucose, also called dextrose if made by corn, (C6H12O6) is an organic compound. It is a carbohydrate that when digested enters the blood stream for direct metabolization by cells for energy. All other carbohydrates, except for dietary fiber which is not digestible, require enzymes to break these compounds into glucose before it can be metabolized.

Glucose can be rapidly made from carbohydrates and can also be made from dietary fat, body fat, protein, and alcohol. Excess glucose is stored as body fat where it can be used later as needed.
