Alcohol is a general term for any compound where oxygen and hydrogen molecules are bound to carbon molecules in a specific configuration. Each type of alcohol has their own properties and uses, with some causing death if consumed. Some alcohols are:
- Ethanol - Also called ethyl alcohol and grain alcohol. Found in alcoholic beverages and used as a solvent.
- Methanol - Also called wood alcohol
- Isopropyl alcohol - Also called rubbing alcohol
- Ethylene glycol - Used in antifreeze
- Denatured alcohol - Ethanol with added toxins (denaturants) to prevent consumption
