Dietary fiber is a type of fiber found in some plant-derived food. It is a type of are carbohydrate that is not digested by an enzyme when eaten and are unable to used as a source of calories. It can be divided into two categories: soluble fiber and insoluble fiber, based on if it can be dissolved in water.

Soluble fiber is made of sticky substances likes gums and pectin which bind with cholesterol and bile acids in the small intestine and eliminates them from the body. It can be found in foods such as psyllium husks, flaxseeds, and collard greens.[1][2]

Insoluble fiber increases the bulkiness of stools and promotes the movement of material in the digestive system. It can be beneficial with people with constipation or irregular stools. It can be found in be found in avocados, chia seeds, pecans, almonds, flaxseed, collard greens, cauliflower, and pumpkin seeds.[1][3]
