Aspartame (C14H18N2O5) is a compound used as substitute for sucrose and other sweetners used for its sweet taste, lack of calories, and lack of insulin response. Unlike other sweeteners, aspartame does not naturally exist as is made only through synthesis.
It is metabolized in the liver and breaks down to form phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol.[1]
