Wood is a porous and fibrous structural plant tissue caused by lignification used to transport water and nutrients. Wood is the main substance of trees and shrubs.
Hardwood and softwood are used to describe wood, but only the plant's method of growth and not the density of the actual wood. Hardwood is applied to wood from deciduous plants while softwood comes from conifers. Some wood from conifers can actually be more dense than some wood from deciduous.[1]
Yakisugi is a traditional method of for preserving wood using fire.
