Yakisugi is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation using fire.

Yakisugi, also called burnt timber cladding, is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation using fire. It is also known by the brand Shou Sugi Ban.

The surface of the wood is slightly charred without combusting the whole piece. The carbonisation makes the wood water-proof and provides increased protection against insects.

Direction

  1. Run a lit blowtorch over the full wood surface to blacken it without catching it on fire
  2. Once cooled, scrape the blackened wood along the grain with a wire brush to remove any loose carbon
    • This will create a lot of dust
  3. Apply a finishing oil across the surface of the wood, such as linseed oil
  4. Let dry before using
