Mycorrhiza is a mutualistic relationship between a plant and a fungus, where the plant provides the fungus with sugars in return for water, nutrients, and protection from soil-borne pests. Mycorrhizas link forest plants together through their underground network of mycelium and greatly improve plant health and survival.

Some mycorrhizal fungi have specific plant hosts while others associate with a variety of plant species.
