A salad is a dish consisting of small pieces of food, usually vegetables or fruit, and typically served at room temperature or chilled. Depending on the ingredients used and portion size, salads are served at any point in a meal, such as an appetizer, a side, an entree, or as a dessert.
The most common type of salad is a garden salad which uses a leafy green base such as lettuce, spinach, kale, or arugula, mixed with other vegetables, fruits, proteins, and dressing. Also common are fruit salads, potato salads, pasta salads, and tuna salads.
