Phase change is the process of a substance moving from one of four states to another. The four states are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, though plasma is uncommon on Earth on not discussed in this article. Although it may take extreme temperature, pressure, or energy, all substances can be changed.

Six Distinct Phase Changes
Name From Into
Freezing Liquid Solid
Melting Solid Liquid
Condensation Gas Liquid
Vaporization Liquid Gas
Sublimation Solid Gas
Deposition Gas Solid
Ionization Gas Plasma
Recombination Plasma Gas

Air conditioners and mini-split systems use phase change properties for heating and cooling.
