Phase change is the process of a substance moving from one of four states to another. The four states are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, though plasma is uncommon on Earth on not discussed in this article. Although it may take extreme temperature, pressure, or energy, all substances can be changed.
Name | From | Into |
---|---|---|
Freezing | Liquid | Solid |
Melting | Solid | Liquid |
Condensation | Gas | Liquid |
Vaporization | Liquid | Gas |
Sublimation | Solid | Gas |
Deposition | Gas | Solid |
Ionization | Gas | Plasma |
Recombination | Plasma | Gas |
Air conditioners and mini-split systems use phase change properties for heating and cooling.
