A mason jar is a molded glass jar that was designed in 1858 for canning and is still widely used in home canning for food preservation. The jars mouth is threaded on the outside to accept a metal ring (called band) used to secure a tin-plated steel disc firmly against the jar's rim. A rubber ring on the disc creates a hermetic seal. The jars and bands can be reused for canning, but new discs should be used.

The jars are versatile and are used outside of canning, such as water and airtight container.
