A forest farm is a site where non-timber crops are grown under an established canopy in an existing forest. This is similar to a forest garden where plants are grown in a fashion modeled after a forest. Forest farming was pioneered by Toyohiko Kagawa in the 1930s.
Forest farms grow under the canopy of existing forests, where as agroforestry is a similar approach that grows crops in land primarily focussed on trees for lumber, pulp, or other wood products, and forest gardens places an equal emphasis on all layers of a planned forest.
