An edge is a transitional zone between two distinct habitats that contains species from both neighboring habitats as well as species specifically adapted to the transitional zone.
This idea is played out in permacultural designs such as an herb spiral or creating ponds that have wavy undulating shorelines rather than a simple circle or oval to increase the amount of edge in a given area.
The chinampa system of growing consistent almost entirely of edges.[1]
