Clay is powdery mineral remains of rocks that have eroded to the size 1/1000th smaller than a grain of sand. It has a distinct slippery feel that is unlike soil or sand.[1]

When wet, clay is soft and can be shaped to form pottery, bricks, and other products. If heated, the clay will harden and keep its shape.

Clay can be divided into three different categories: stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware. Stoneware and porcelain are higher quality, able to withstand higher temperatures, and typically used by industry and hobbyists. Earthenware is generally weaker and fired at lower temperatures and is used to make terracotta. Stoneware is more porous rendering it a poor choice for holding water.[1]
