Vermiculite is a mineral dug out of the ground as a hard rock then heated to expand its volume.

Vermiculite is a group of magnesium aluminum silicate minerals. It is available in crude and exfoliated forms, with the exfoliated version the most commonly available, where the crude form is heated to expand it 30 times its original size. The exfoliated form is used as a soil amendment in agriculture to stabilize soil temperatures and for its ability to hold air and water. The material is also used in construction, industry, and horticulture.[1]

Exfoliated coarse vermiculite is used as a soil component in square foot gardening.
