Urea ((NH2)2CO) is an organic compound that is produced in the liver. The liver converts ammonia, which is highly toxic in the body, into urea, which has a very low toxicity. Most urea produced is not needed and removed from the blood by the kidneys where it is excreted out of the body through urine. It is in urine where the compound was first discovered in 1773, and was the first synthesized organic compound in 1825.
