A trio is a planting of three different tree species in an arrangement where no species is planted next to another tree of its own species. This is the recommended layout for orchards. Typically a nitrogen fixing tree is included in this layout to fertilize the soil. This arrangement positions nitrogen-fixing trees adjacent to the other trees and isolates pests to prevent them from easily spreading.
