Sun scald is a permanently damaged tree bark caused by the sun warming the bark during the day during winter.

Sun scald is a form of permanent tree bark damage caused by the sun warming and activating dormant tree tissue in the winter only to refreeze and be killed in the cold of the night.

Sun scald can be prevented by positioning understory plants under the tree on the sun exposed side of the plant. The understory plants help filter and block the sun from causing damage to the tree bark.
