A scion, which means a lineal descendant of a notable family, is a branch segment from a tree. Scions can be grafted onto rootstock to clone a desirable tree.
Make a Scion
- Identify a tree with characteristics you want to replicate, such as a delicious apple.
- Return to this tree early Spring when the buds are formed but the leaves have not yet started to grow.
- Cut a one year old shoot from the tree. You only need three buds to on a segment to graft. A shoot can be further cut into smaller segments with each segment having at least three buds.
