A pigment is a something that gives an object its color due to how it reflects light. Pigments are often isolated to give color to something else. They are the basis for all paints and dyes. Pigment sources include animals, plants, rocks, minerals, and salts.[1]

Early pigments were simply soil or clay, mixed with spit or fat, whereas modern pigments are the synthesized results of chemical engineering.i[1]
