Photosynthesis is a chemical process used by plants to turn sunlight into complex carbohydrates.
Plants serve as the primary producer of every ecosystem, and the total amount of sunlight captured by plants is referred to as the gross primary production (GPP), while net primary production (NPP) is the amount of solar energy captured by plants that is not used for respiration that is converted into biomass.
