Garage
A garage is a walled and roofed structure for storing vehicles. The structure protects the vehicles from precipitation, theft, and vandalism. They may be attached to another structure, such as a shelter, or as a detached outbuilding. Modern residences typically have a garage that can accommodate one or two vehicles.
Standard garage door dimensions:
Type | Width (feet) | Height (feet) |
---|---|---|
Single Car | 8, 9, and 10 | 7 |
Double Car | 12, 14, and 16 | 7 |
Driveway
A driveway is the pathway from a street to the garage.
Standard driveway dimensions are:
- 20 feet length[1]
- 10 feet minimum width for one car, with 12 feet preferred for getting in and out of the car
- 20 feet minimum width for two cars, with 24 feet preferred
- 30 feet minimum width for three cars
The minimum recommended slope of a driveway is 1.15° and the maximum recommended slope is 14.04°.[2][3]
Ribbon driveway
A ribbon driveway is a style of driveway that consists of two parallel strips of concrete, mortar-set stone, or brick.[4] Ribbon driveways reduce the amount of runoff from precipitation and are best suited for shorter, straight driveways, as they can become impractical for long or curved driveways.[4] The two strips should each be 2 feet wide spaced with a 5 foot center line, leaving a gap between the strips of 3 feet.[4]
