A cultivar, short for cultivated variety, is a plant specially propagated to ensure immediate offspring retain the same characteristics of parent plant. Cultivars typically originate as a hybrid or mutation and resulting seeds would result in plants with different characteristics. Similar to a cultivar is a variety.[1]

The parent plant and their genetically identical offspring are identified by its genus and species names followed by another name that is unique to that species. This cultivar name is written in single quotes and without being italicized.
