Algae is a generic term that groups non-flowering plants that use simple inorganic materials and lack true stems, roots, leaves, and vascular tissue. They are typically aquatic and include seaweeds as well as single-celled organisms.
Bacteria in the Cyanobacteria phylum, such as spirulina, is often though of as algae, but they are not.
